Setling Privacy Policy
Setling is a free app for iPhone and Apple Watch that guides beginners through strength training at the gym. This policy explains what information the app uses, where it is kept, who can see it, and how you stay in control. It covers the Setling iPhone app, the Setling Apple Watch app and Setling’s Live Activity. You can also read it inside the app.
The short version
- The developer collects no data about you through the app. Setling has no server, no user accounts, no ads, no analytics, no tracking and no third-party software development kits (SDKs). We cannot see anything you enter in the app. We only receive what you send us if you email us (see “When you contact us”), and this website is delivered by a hosting provider (see “This website”).
- Your health answers stay on your iPhone. Your answers to the health and back-pain questions, your aches and limitations, weekly check-ins, body weight and height are stored only on your iPhone (and in its backup, if you use one). Your Apple Watch does not get them, but your plan on the Watch can include notes based on them, and your iPhone and Apple Watch share the pain reports from workouts (see points 1 and 6). Setling never uploads any of this to iCloud.
- Your plan and workouts sync through your own iCloud. If you are signed in to iCloud, your training settings, plan and workout history are kept in your private iCloud storage so they stay in sync across your own devices. Only you can access this data; we can’t.
- Family shares very little. If you join a family, other members see in Setling the family name, members’ first names and, if someone chooses to share it, a gym equipment list. When you are invited, Setling also shows the Apple Account name of the person who created the family, and Apple’s iCloud sharing shows participants’ Apple Account names and may show their contact details (see point 4). Plans, workouts, weights and health data are never shared.
- You are in control. You can export your data as a file, correct your answers and delete everything from inside the app at any time.
Who is responsible
Setling is developed and published by Yunus Emre Coşkun, who is the controller responsible for this app under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and similar laws.
- Name: Yunus Emre Coşkun
- Postal address: Boxgraben 2, 52064 Aachen, Germany
- Email: emrecoskuninfo@gmail.com
In this policy, “we”, “us” and “the developer” mean Yunus Emre Coşkun, and “you” means the person using Setling.
What we collect through the app: nothing
We do not run any server for Setling and we do not receive any of the information you enter in the app. (Emails you send us and visits to this website are covered in “When you contact us” and “This website”.) In particular, Setling:
- does not ask you to create an account or sign in. It uses the iCloud account that is already on your device, and only for the optional sync and Family features;
- contains no advertising, analytics, crash-reporting or other third-party SDKs;
- does not track you across other companies’ apps or websites and does not use your device’s advertising identifier;
- does not access your location, contacts, camera or microphone;
- does not sell, rent or trade your data, and does not share it with advertisers or data brokers.
Because we can’t see your data, we also can’t look it up, correct it or delete it for you. Instead, the app gives you the tools to do all of this yourself (see “Your rights and choices”).
Information Apple may share with us
Like every developer on the App Store, we can see aggregated App Store statistics from Apple, such as the number of downloads. If you have chosen in your device settings to share analytics with app developers (Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements → Share With App Developers), Apple may also give us crash reports and basic usage statistics for Setling. Apple collects these under its own privacy policy and provides them in a form that does not identify you. They are technical (for example, where in the app a crash happened) and do not contain your training or health answers. You can turn this off at any time in the same setting.
What the app stores, and where
Setling needs some information to build a plan that fits you. Below is everything the app keeps, grouped by where it is stored.
1. On your iPhone, never in iCloud: your health information
- your answers to the health screening questions (for example about heart conditions, chest pain, dizziness, long-term conditions or medicines, pregnancy, or being ill at the moment);
- your answers about back pain, aches and limitations;
- your answer about a history of eating disorders or current care by a dietitian, which is used only to decide whether food tips and body-weight trend assessments are shown;
- pain reports, from the “Something hurts” button, from rating a set “It hurt” and from tapping “It hurt” while finding your starting weight;
- your weekly check-in answers (rest, soreness, difficulty, and pain compared with last week);
- body weight entries, and your height and weight.
Your Apple Watch does not receive your answers, your height and weight, your body weight entries or your check-ins. It does receive your plan, and the plan can include notes based on your answers: for example a precaution that names a condition from your health answers, movements to leave out because of an ache, or a lighter week. During a workout, your iPhone and Apple Watch share the workout’s pain reports and “It hurt” ratings, whichever device you use, and pain reports you make on the Watch are sent to your iPhone (see point 6).
This information is used on your iPhone to build and adjust your plan: for example, to leave out exercises that don’t suit you, to suggest a lighter week, to recommend that you see a doctor, or to show your body-weight trend. It is protected by iOS data protection, which encrypts it on your iPhone’s storage. Setling never uploads it to iCloud or anywhere else. Apart from what your Apple Watch receives, the only ways it leaves your iPhone are ones you control: a data export you create yourself (see point 7) and your normal device backup, if you have iCloud Backup or computer backups turned on. Restoring such a backup, or transferring directly from your old iPhone, brings it to a new iPhone.
2. Only on your iPhone: machine photos (optional)
If you add a photo of a machine at your gym so you recognize it next time, you choose it with Apple’s photo picker. Setling receives only the photo you pick and has no access to the rest of your photo library. The photo is stored only on your iPhone (and in its backup, if you use one), is not uploaded to iCloud by Setling and can be removed at any time.
3. In your private iCloud database: your training
If you are signed in to iCloud, Setling keeps a copy of the following in your private iCloud database (Apple CloudKit), so it stays in sync across your own devices and can be restored when you set up a new iPhone:
- your first name (if you entered one), your job (if you entered it), age range, gym experience, the machines you recognize, daily activity and goal;
- your training days and times, gym equipment, units, language and app settings (such as “Don’t ask about my weight”);
- your training plan, without the health notes behind it;
- your workout history and progress per exercise: exercises, sets, reps, weights, how each set felt, the progression suggestions you accepted or declined, and your own notes on machine settings, without pain reports;
- the date of your last weekly check-in (not your answers);
- a record of the consents you gave during setup and when you gave them.
The plan itself can reflect your answers, for example when an exercise was swapped for an easier one, but the answers and notes behind it are not uploaded. Your height and weight are removed before anything is synced.
Your private iCloud database belongs to your Apple Account. Apple stores and protects it under Apple’s own privacy policy and iCloud terms. Neither we nor anyone else can access it through Setling. If you are not signed in to iCloud, or you turn off iCloud for Setling in your device settings, this data stays only on your devices and everything except sync and Family keeps working.
4. Shared with your family (optional)
The Family feature lets people who train at the same gym share a gym equipment list. It needs iCloud on both sides. A family is stored in a shared area of the creator’s iCloud, using Apple’s iCloud sharing, and contains:
- the family name;
- for each member: their first name as entered in Setling, their role (creator or member), the date they joined, and an ID that iCloud creates for them for Setling, which does not contain their name or email address;
- optionally, a gym equipment list that a member chooses to share.
Each member’s iPhone keeps a copy of this family information. Apple’s sharing record for the family holds the family name and the list of participants.
Plans, workouts, weights, body weight and health answers are never shared with family members. You invite people with Apple’s standard iCloud sharing, sending the invitation through Messages, Mail or another app you choose, and only people you invite can join. When someone opens an invitation, Setling shows them the Apple Account name of the person who created the family (“Invited by …”). As with any iCloud sharing, Apple may show participants the name and contact details (such as an email address or phone number) linked to each person’s Apple Account. The creator can remove members, anyone can leave at any time, and if the creator leaves, the family is closed for everyone. A family can have up to 6 members.
5. Apple Health (optional, only with your permission)
If you allow it on Apple’s Health permission screen, Setling:
- saves each workout you do with Setling to Apple Health when it ends, including cardio & mobility days, as a strength training workout with details such as its date and duration; and
- reads your heart rate during workouts you record with Setling, to show it live on your Apple Watch.
Setling also asks for permission to read your active energy during workouts you record with it, so that the energy your Apple Watch measures can be recorded with the workout. Setling does not show it in the app or use it for anything else.
Setling does not keep copies of your heart rate or active energy outside Apple Health. Data from Apple Health is never used for advertising or marketing, never sold, never shared with third parties and never uploaded to iCloud by Setling. You can change these permissions at any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Health → Setling. Workouts already saved to Apple Health stay there until you delete them in the Health app.
6. Notifications, Live Activities and your Apple Watch
Workout reminders (15 minutes before a planned session, if you turn them on) and the alert when your rest is over are local notifications: they are scheduled on your iPhone and are not sent through any server. While you train, a Live Activity can show your current exercise, set and rest countdown on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island; it is created and updated on your device. Reminders and Live Activities can be seen by anyone who can see your screen. You can turn them off in Profile → Workout reminders, in Settings → Notifications → Setling, and in Settings → Apps → Setling → Live Activities.
Your iPhone and your paired Apple Watch exchange the information needed for workouts. Your iPhone sends your plan (including the notes based on your health answers described in point 1), your schedule, gym equipment, goal and gym experience, progress per exercise, the dates of your past strength workouts, the end date of a lighter week if one is planned, and your language and units. Both devices send each other the current workout: logged sets, how each set felt and any pain reports. Your Apple Watch keeps a copy of what it receives, and keeps workouts done on it until your iPhone has them. This uses Apple’s system connection between paired devices (WatchConnectivity and HealthKit). When the devices are not near each other, Apple may relay the data through its own servers. Setling does not send it to any server of its own, and it does not pass through us.
7. Exports and sharing you start yourself
Profile → Your data → Export my data creates a file in JSON format with your Setling training and health data: your profile, settings, plan, workout history and progress, and your health answers, pain reports, check-ins, body weight entries, height and weight. It does not include machine photos or your family details (family name, members’ first names and the shared gym list), which you can see in the app, for example in Profile → Family. The file is created on your iPhone, and you decide where to save or send it using Apple’s share sheet. Once you share it, it is handled by the app or person you shared it with, so please keep it somewhere secure. The same applies to family invitations you send through Messages, Mail or other apps.
Why the data is used, and the legal bases
Almost everything described above happens on your own devices or in your own iCloud account, under your control. For transparency, these are the purposes and the legal bases under the GDPR:
- Health information (health screening, back-pain questions, aches and limitations, eating-disorder history, pain reports, weekly check-ins, body weight entries, height and weight): used to adapt your training, suggest a lighter week or other changes, and tell you when to see a doctor. Legal basis: your explicit consent, which you give during setup (“I agree that my health answers may be used to plan my training”), under Art. 6(1)(a) and Art. 9(2)(a) GDPR.
- Training data, iCloud sync and Family (profile including your job if you entered it, schedule, gym equipment, plan, workout history and the family details described in point 4): needed to provide the features you choose to use. Legal basis: performance of a contract, meaning providing the app you use (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR).
- Apple Health, notifications, Live Activities and machine photos: used only when you allow them or add them yourself. Legal basis: your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR, and for Apple Health data also Art. 9(2)(a) GDPR).
- Crash reports and statistics from Apple: only if you opted in to sharing them in your device settings. Legal basis: your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR), which you give and withdraw in Apple’s settings.
Do you have to provide this information? No law or contract requires it. Setling needs your height and weight, your answers to the health questions and your consent to their use to build your plan, so setup can’t be finished without them. Your name, job, body-weight entries and Apple Health access are optional; without them everything else still works.
Storing and reading information on your device is strictly necessary to provide the app you asked for (see, for example, Section 25(2) of the German Telecommunications Digital Services Data Protection Act, TDDDG).
You can withdraw your consent at any time. Because your health answers are central to how Setling adapts your training, you withdraw your consent to their use by deleting your data with Delete all my data (see below); you can set the app up again whenever you like. For Apple Health, notifications, Live Activities and iCloud, you can also withdraw permission in your device settings. Withdrawing consent does not affect processing that took place before.
Automatic plan adjustments
Setling adjusts your plan automatically based on your answers and workouts, for example by leaving out an exercise, scheduling a lighter week or pausing weight increases. This happens on your device, only affects your training suggestions, and has no legal or similarly significant effects on you. Progression suggestions such as more weight or an extra set are only applied if you accept them, and you can change your answers at any time.
Who can see your data
- You, on your own devices.
- Apple, as the provider of iCloud, Apple Health, notifications, the connection between your iPhone and Apple Watch, the photo picker and device backups. Apple handles this data for you under its own privacy policy and terms; we have no access to it. iCloud data may be stored in Apple data centers outside your country, as set out in your agreement with Apple.
- Your family members, and only if you join a family: in Setling they see the family name, first names and the shared gym equipment list, and an invitation shows the Apple Account name of the person who created the family. Apple’s iCloud sharing shows them participants’ Apple Account names and may show their contact details (see point 4).
- Anyone you choose to send an export file or an invitation to.
Nobody else. We don’t sell or share your data, and we have no access to it ourselves.
When you contact us
If you email us, we receive your email address, your message and anything you attach. We use this only to answer you and keep it only as long as needed to handle your request, unless the law requires us to keep it longer. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR where your message concerns the app you use, and otherwise our legitimate interest in answering messages we receive (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Our email service is Gmail, so your message is also processed by Google under Google’s privacy policy. Google may process your email in the United States. Google LLC is certified under the EU–U.S. Data Privacy Framework, for which the European Commission has adopted an adequacy decision (Art. 45 GDPR). Where we rely on our legitimate interest, you can object (see “Your right to object”). Please don’t send health information by email; we never need it to help you.
This website
This website is hosted on Cloudflare Pages, a service of Cloudflare, Inc. (USA). When you visit it, Cloudflare processes your IP address and technical request data, such as your browser type, the page you requested and the time of the request, on our behalf to deliver the pages and protect them against attacks. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in delivering a secure website (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Cloudflare may process this data outside the EU, including in the United States. Cloudflare, Inc. is certified under the EU–U.S. Data Privacy Framework, for which the European Commission has adopted an adequacy decision (Art. 45 GDPR). This website sets no cookies and uses no analytics or tracking. For more information, see Cloudflare’s privacy policy. You can object to this processing (see “Your right to object”).
How long data is kept
- Data in the app and in your iCloud: until you delete it. Setling does not delete your history on its own.
- Family data: until you leave the family, the creator removes you, or the family is closed. A gym equipment list you shared stays with the family until someone in the family shares a new one or the family is closed. Deleting the app alone does not remove you from a family.
- Device backups: your iPhone and Apple Watch backups may contain Setling’s local data until those backups are replaced or deleted, as managed by you and Apple.
- Apple Health: workouts saved to Apple Health stay there until you delete them in the Health app.
- Support emails: as described in “When you contact us”.
Deleting your data
Profile → Your data → Delete all my data (then confirm with Delete everything) removes:
- all Setling data on your iPhone, including your health answers and machine photos, and on your Apple Watch the next time it connects to your iPhone;
- your Setling data in your iCloud. Setling on your other devices that sync with the same iCloud account then deletes all of its data there too, including the health answers stored on them, the next time they connect to iCloud;
- your family membership. If you created the family, it is closed for everyone; other members keep their own plans and history.
This cannot be undone, so export your data first if you want to keep a copy. Workouts already saved in Apple Health stay in Apple Health, and you can delete them in the Health app. Deleting the Setling app from your iPhone removes its data on the iPhone, but not the copy in your iCloud, and it does not remove you from a family, so please use Delete all my data before deleting the app. If iCloud can’t be reached at that moment, Setling finishes deleting the iCloud copy, and leaving or closing your family, the next time you open it while signed in to the same Apple Account with iCloud available, so keep the app installed until then. If you have already deleted the app, you can remove Setling’s iCloud data in your iPhone’s iCloud storage settings; Setling on your other devices then deletes its data there too. This may not remove you from a family that someone else created, so please ask its creator to remove you. If you need help, contact us and we will explain the steps.
Your rights and choices
Under the GDPR and similar laws in other countries, you have the following rights. Because the developer holds none of your app data, you can use most of them directly in the app:
- Access and data portability: Profile → Your data → Export my data gives you your Setling training and health data in a machine-readable JSON file (see point 7). Machine photos and your family details are not in the file, but you can see them in the app.
- Rectification: change your answers at any time in Profile (About you, Days & times, Gym equipment, and Health & limitations).
- Erasure: Profile → Your data → Delete all my data.
- Withdrawing consent: see “Why the data is used, and the legal bases” above.
- Restriction: you can stop any processing yourself by turning off iCloud for Setling, Apple Health access, notifications or Live Activities, leaving a family, or deleting your data.
- Objection: see “Your right to object” below.
- Complaint: you have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority, in particular in the EU country where you live or work, or where you believe your rights were infringed. In Germany, this is usually the data protection authority of your federal state.
- If you live in Türkiye: you also have rights under Law No. 6698 on the Protection of Personal Data (KVKK). First apply to us, the data controller, by email; we will answer within 30 days at the latest. If we reject your application, you find our answer insufficient, or we do not answer in time, you can complain to the Personal Data Protection Board (Kişisel Verileri Koruma Kurulu) within 30 days of learning of our answer, and in any case within 60 days of your application (KVKK Art. 13 and 14). The Turkish version of this policy has more details.
If you have a question about your rights or need help, email emrecoskuninfo@gmail.com.
Your right to object
Right to object (Art. 21 GDPR): where we process data based on our legitimate interest (answering support emails and delivering this website), you have the right to object to this processing at any time, on grounds relating to your particular situation. To object, email emrecoskuninfo@gmail.com.
Security
Data on your devices is protected by iOS and watchOS data protection, which encrypts it on the device’s storage. iCloud data is encrypted by Apple in transit and on Apple’s servers. Setling does not send your data to any server of its own. To protect your information, use a passcode on your iPhone and Apple Watch and keep them up to date. No system is completely secure, so please also keep any export files somewhere secure.
Minimum age
Setling is for people aged 16 and over. The app asks for your age range during setup and does not let people under 16 continue. It is not designed for children. If you believe someone under 16 has used Setling, their data can be removed with Delete all my data on their device, or you can contact us.
Not medical advice
Setling gives general exercise guidance. It is not a medical device, cannot examine you and does not diagnose or treat any condition. If you are unsure whether exercise is right for you, please check with a doctor before you start. If you notice warning signs such as chest pain, severe shortness of breath, fainting, or sudden weakness or numbness, stop and get medical help; in an emergency, call your local emergency number.
Changes to this policy
We will update this policy when the app or the law changes, and the date at the top shows when it was last updated. If a change affects how your data is handled, we will explain it in the app’s update notes and, where required, ask for your consent again.
